What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is a disease that causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints. It often affects the hands, wrists, and knees. Over time, it can damage the joints and make daily tasks harder.
RA is not the same as the joint pain that comes with age. It happens when the body’s immune system attacks the joints by mistake. It is a long-term condition, but the right treatment can slow it down and reduce the pain.
How Infusion Therapy Helps RA

How often will I need treatment?
It depends on your medicine. Many patients come in every four to eight weeks once treatment is established. Your healthcare team will tell you what is right for you.
How long does each session take?
Most sessions take one to three hours, depending on the medication. Some medicines need to drip slowly, while others take less time. Your first session may take longer, because the nurse gives the medicine slowly and watches how your body responds. Later visits often go faster. Not always. Some infusion treatments work best alongside the medications you already take. In other cases, you’ll need to pause your current medicine while you’re receiving infusions. How do I prepare for my first RA infusion appointment?
Your healthcare team will give you instructions before your first visit. In general, it helps to drink plenty of water the day before, eat a normal meal, and take your regular medicines unless your team tells you otherwise. Wear comfortable clothes with sleeves that roll up easily.
Sessions run one to three hours, so bring something to help pass the time — a book, headphones, or your phone. There is a TV in the room if you want to watch a show, and snacks and drinks are provided. You may also bring someone with you if it helps you feel more comfortable. Extra seating is available for a support person, and many patients find that having another person there helps with understanding the medication education.
