What is infusion therapy?
Infusion therapy delivers medicine directly into your body, rather than through a pill you swallow. Some conditions respond better to medicine given this way than to pills, because the treatment reaches your bloodstream faster and in a more precise dose.
There are two ways your medication may be given. The route depends on the type of medication you’re receiving.
IV infusions
An IV infusion delivers medicine into a vein through a small IV line. The medicine enters your bloodstream directly, and treatment typically takes an hour or more, depending on the medication.
Injections
Many infusion therapy medications are given by injection instead. These are most often subcutaneous, going into the skin on the back of the arm or the side of the abdomen through a small needle. Injections take significantly less time than an IV infusion, which can shorten your appointment.
Answers to common questions
Is infusion therapy safe?
Yes, when trained professionals give it. The FDA has approved the medicines we infuse, and many have been used safely for years. Before your first session, your healthcare team reviews your health and your medicines to make sure the treatment is right for you. During every session, a trained nurse stays with you and watches how you respond.
Will my insurance cover infusion therapy?
Most insurance covers infusion therapy when it’s medically necessary. We take Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and most commercial insurance plans. Every plan is different, so our team verifies your benefits and obtains prior authorization before your first session. You’ll know your costs before you arrive.
How long is each session, and how often will I come in?
Both depend on your medicine. Some infusions take about 30 minutes, others last several hours, and your first session may run longer while the nurse watches how your body responds. Some patients come in every few weeks, others less often. Your healthcare team tells you what to expect for your treatment.
How do I get infusion therapy at Denver Harbor?
Infusion therapy starts with a conversation with your healthcare team at Vecino’s Denver Harbor Family Health Center. If you’re already a patient, your team will determine whether this treatment is right for you and work with your insurance to get you preapproved before treatment begins. If you’re new to Vecino Health Centers, the first step is becoming a patient — it’s simple, and we’ll guide you from there.
Can my specialist refer me, and can I keep seeing them?
Yes to both. If a specialist outside Vecino is managing your condition — for example, a rheumatologist, gastroenterologist, or neurologist — they can send a referral to our infusion center. You’ll also need to become an established patient of Vecino Health Centers, and our team helps with that.
Is this the same as an IV vitamin drip?
No. IV drip bars and wellness clinics offer vitamin, hydration, or NAD infusions, which aren’t prescription treatments for a medical condition. Our infusion center gives FDA-approved medicines prescribed by a doctor to treat conditions like Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and iron-deficiency anemia — covered by insurance, and connected to your regular healthcare team.
Does infusion therapy hurt?
You feel a pinch when the nurse places the IV or injects the medication, similar to a blood draw.
What are the side effects?
Side effects depend on the medication you’re receiving, and they aren’t common. Most people have none that are serious. Some feel tired, get a headache, or notice mild soreness at the IV or injection site.
Reactions during IV treatment itself — chills, itching, or a change in blood pressure — are rare, and your nurse watches for them throughout. Systemic reactions are rarer still with injections.
Will I keep taking my other medicines?
Not always the same way. Some infusion treatments work best alongside the medications you already take. In other cases, you’ll need to pause your current medicine while you’re receiving infusions. Your care team reviews everything you’re taking and builds the plan that’s right for you — never stop a medication on your own.

What to expect at your infusion visit
You settle into an oversized recliner while the medicine goes in. There’s a TV, snacks and drinks, and room for a family member or friend to sit with you — bring a book or your headphones and make yourself at home.
A trained nurse stays with you the whole time. Before your first visit, your healthcare team walks you through how to prepare and what to expect. Sessions can run anywhere from about 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the medicine.
